Aim: The Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) is managing a new program to strengthen African capacity to conduct HIV/AIDS prevention trials. This program emphasizes the need to extend the concept of capacity beyond the traditional technical and scientific skills to include research management, leadership, administration, grant writing, and community and policy engagement. Purpose of the satellite session: This session will discuss the current and future capacity strengthening needs for the conduct of HIV/AIDS prevention trials in Africa. Findings from three capacity-building projects supported by GHRI between 2006 and 2008 will also be used to initiate discussions.
