Aim: The aim of the paper is to analyse the impact of HIV/AIDS on small agriculture and its impact in food security
| |
Method / Issue: The paper will be based on the results of a project run by Kimetrica International Limited in partnership with the George Washington Center for Global Health, the National Institute for Public Health in Mexico and coordinated by UNAIDS. The project will examine, among other things, practical options through case studies on how smallholder farmers could benefit from local food procurement. While there is increasing interest in smallholder procurement systems, little is known about the costs, benefits and risks of these approaches compared to more traditional bulk procurement or food aid imports. There are knowledge gaps both on the demand and supply side. It is essential to gain a better understanding of the procurement methods that are viable and low-risk for urban and rural based programmes. A thorough study of six diverse countries (Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Malawi, Mozambique and Uganda) will shed light on these critical issues.
These case studies will include a review of essential literature and background documents, as well as interviews with social protection implementers, health programme implementers, other potential partners, farmers and farmer groups and appropriate national and local government officials.

Results / Comments: The results are dependent upon the project that is currently under implementation. By the date of the conference the paper will present the preliminary results.
| |
Discussion: The paper will shed light on the feasibility, costs and benefits of increasing small-scale farmer incomes through expanding market opportunities by providing food and nutritional inputs through HIV/AIDS programmes.
