Aim: The National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA) has presented ‘CHIN WAG – a chat show all about HIV Treatments and Healthy HIV Living’ in urban and rural centres around Australia for nearly a decade now. It is an initiative of the outreach treatments education and information project, TREATAWARE (formerly the AIDS Treatment Project Australia). The events are hosted by popular community identities and include a panel of local professionals, generally including an S100 prescriber, a counsellor, a nutritionist and a positive treatments spokesperson.
| |
Method / Issue: The events have always evaluated well as informative and entertaining forums. An attendee at a recent ‘CHIN WAG – a chat show all about HIV Treatments and Healthy HIV Living’ said, “What I think is helpful for me about the CHIN WAG chat show is that as a result of the humourous way that some cold hard facts are given with a bit of levity, I have been encouraged to be pro-active about decisions around monitoring my HIV care.” Nurse Nancy aka Dr Kath Albury, a co-host of the chat show, calls this education and information intervention model, “showbiz homeopathy!”

Results / Comments: This year an external evaluation was conducted over three events with a view to focussing solely on the educational value of the events. Through the evaluation report specific elements of inherent educational value of the ‘chat show’ are related. A re- emphasis is given to other meaningful and positive outcomes for those HIV positive people, their friends, carers and partners, and HIV education, health and service providers who attend.
