  Aim:
Proposal: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an effective and evidence based strategy to enable patients to adhere to treatment and to make behavioural changes to improve their physical health. MI has been widely applied in a range of health settings across many parts of the world, including North America, Africa and Europe (e.g. Miller & Rollnick, 1991; Burke, Arkowitz & Mencola, 2003) and has been found to be extremely effective in modifying a range of maladaptive behaviours that may be compromising health and wellbeing. The aim will be to run an interactive workshop at AIDS Impact 2009, to enable clinicians to develop and utilise MI skills. The workshop will highlight the usefulness and challenges of teaching empathic listening skills and behavioural change techniques to clinicians many of whom may be from non-mental health specialities. Examples will be drawn from the facilitators experiences of running Motivational Interviewing training programmes for members of a UK-based multidisciplinary HIV team. The multi-media training program will consist of videos, role-plays and practical skills training. All participants will be provided with a comprehensive package including the training program, protocols, patient worksheets, and competency checklists. The training programme will be restricted to a first come first serve basis, with a suggestion for the maximum number of attendees to be 30 people. Attendees will be asked to complete anonymised evaluations which may contribute to publications reporting on the efficacy of the programme.
