Aim: Persons living with HIV/AIDS are faced with numerous and complex issues. These can include stigmatization, isolation, fear, low self esteem and self worth, depression, multiple and impending losses, and unresolved grieving. These issues are, in many ways, unique to their situation. Art therapy is an innovative approach to visually express these and other relevant concerns.
| |
Method / Issue: Art therapy is a creative approach to express significant life events, experiences and feelings through the production of artwork. Using art therapy as a visual means of expression, participants in this interactive and experientially based workshop will be invited to create artwork depicting their journey and personal experiences of living with HIV/AIDS within a group mural. The mural will be available for participation and viewing throughout the duration of the conference. Participation in this workshop will provide individuals with opportunities for emotional support, to exchange and share similar life experiences, and to connect with others within a medium that transcends language, culture, and geographical barriers.

Results / Comments: Art therapy is a client centred and culturally sensitive psychotherapeutic approach, and has been well received by persons living with HIV/AIDS. It has proven effective in providing creative opportunities to reduce stress, anxiety, increase self-awareness, and enhance quality of life. Art therapy provides opportunities for the visual expression of significant events in order to facilitate personal awareness and emotional healing. This reveals much information about the individual’s emotional state and level of coping. Because art therapy is an interactive modality, individuals can experience a sense of empowerment and control by direct participation in the therapeutic process.
