Aim: To develop the strategy of communication in a cross-sectional study that measure the vulnerability of health needs and access to services of the transgender people in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
| |
Method / Issue: The Project Muriel is a cross-sectional study of transgender people who attend or are accessed by health services or social assistance. The services ed for the study are specialized for STDs and/or social services located in 7 municipalities of Sao Paulo, Brazil. During the quantitative phase interviewers using a tablet applied a semi-structured questionnaire. After answering the questionnaire, participants were encouraged to perform tests for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and to be vaccinated against hepatitis B, preferably in the same department where the interview was being held. The qualitative component is constituted of in-depth interviews.

Results / Comments: The information available to conceptualize communication and representativeness of the transgender people in Brazil is scarce. During the search for an identity for the project we found Muriel, a transgender character developed by cartoonist Laerte Coutinho, who is also a transgender, regularly published in a newspaper of general circulation in São Paulo.
The illustrated story of Muriel tells Hugo's adventures on his/her journey of gender reassignment from male-to-female. The course of the character deals with clarity, humor and wisdom, some of the issues related to the initial proposal of the project: prejudice, discrimination, body transformation, work, health, rights and violence.
A small material was designed to introduce Muriel character in different situations. Using the portfolio, the project team held meetings and informal conversations with transgender people in Sao Paulo to check acceptance, empathy, and communication strategy of the character. The main goal was to identify the pros and cons in the final choice of the comic as an identity for the project. The results confirmed overall acceptability of Muriel as name and logo design. The character was a courtesy of Laerte Coutinho to Muriel Project.
