Aim: Mobile tools, especially smart phones and Internet, have been increasingly used in HIV continuum of care. However, such interventions are limited in China, a country with the largest number of Interne users and high rate of smartphone ownership. This study aims to assess the acceptability of mobile-based HIV continuum of care among Chinese PLWHA and their specific needs.

Method / Issue: We conducted qualitative interviews with 18 healthcare providers and 13 PLWHA in a large city in South China. Each individual in-depth interview was audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. We used thematic content analysis with Atlas ti to analyze the data.

Results / Comments: All healthcare providers welcome the idea of mobile-based intervention for PLWHA. Some had used some online social media for basic outreach and communication with patients. They believed mobile tools could facilitate patient-provider communication, update information with patients, and enhance social support for PLWHA. Most PLWHA supported a mobile-based program with a few exceptions of elderly who didn’t use smartphones. Patients were especially eager to receive up-to-date information on medical treatment, available resources for PLWHA, counseling on reproductive and sexual health, and mental health services. They also expressed concerns on privacy and confidentiality with mobile-based program.

Discussion: It is acceptable to do a mobile-based health promotion program for PLWHA in China. Such programs need to be culturally sensitive and tailored to local patients’ needs it also needs to be built into existing resources and structures. It is critical to include key stakeholders in the planning phase of intervention programs.
