Aim: The treatment of chronic liver disease in HIV patients is particularly important, and the detection of liver fibrosis is essential for decision-making. The objectives are to describe the characteristics of HIV patients who underwent Transition Elastography (TE) and analyze the prevalence and association of several factors in the subgroup of patients with significant fibrosis.

Method / Issue: Retrospective-prospective, descriptive, single-center study, conducted in a tertiary university hospital in the period from January 2014 to June 2014, with 137 HIV+ patients coinfected with HCV with detectable HCV-RNA, who underwent ET.

Results / Comments: 46% of patients had no fibrosis (F0-F1), 13% had moderately significant fibrosis (F2), 13% had significant fibrosis (F3), and cirrhosis 21% (F4). 100% of patients were co-infected with HCV, and the most frequent genotype was 1 (62.7%) followed by genotype 4 (18.2%). Significant relationship was found between the presence of advanced fibrosis and the absence of sustained viral response (SVR), CD4 count <200 and alcohol.

Discussion: 1/3 of all patients present significant and advanced fibrosis stage. Significant fibrosis was associated with lack of SVR, CD4 count <200 and alcohol habit. It is advisable to treat a greater number of patients and earlier and in this aspect, to have a test as TE facilitates the diagnosis of the grade of fibrosis to indicate the time
