Aim: The study's overall objective is to evaluate the effects of psychosocial factors on the intervention / involvement of psychosocial counselors in the global care of PLHA within hospitals. This analysis focuses on preliminary data since the project is still running.
The role played by these actors is today unavoidable in the provision of care to PLHA however there was no initiative to support psychologically them.

Method / Issue: The study was conducted on the sites of medical care supported by the ESTHERAID project in four (4) administrative districts of BURKINA FASO. This is a prospective study of qualitative type. Semi-structured interviews were completed. Data from interviews were the subject of a content analysis. The study population consists of 50 Counselors, 15 heads of associations and 15 health workers (doctors, nurses, Pharmacy preparers).

Results / Comments: The majority of counselors are investing heavily in patient assistance relationship to such an extent that this activity invades their privacy. Their dual status of counselors and carrier of HIV therefore both beneficiaries and patients of the structure that employs them sometimes put in a situation of "privileged" and "patient forgot."
Most counselors declare their sensitivity to deal with unresolved social cases with difficult patients and request to be accompanied by psychologists.
The lack of room dedicated to counselors at some centers to conduct their activities, insufficient resources to meet the care demands are sources of suffering from them.

Discussion: The ESTHERAID project, which was being implemented by ESTHER on UNITAID funding, undertook actions to accompany the counselors. It was to recruit and train a pool of national psychologists on the methods and techniques of psychological supervision and analysis of professional practices. This support is all the more crucial that the counselors are subject to many stress factors. Moreover there is no scientific data on the wellness conditions and the effectiveness of the counselors.
We can finally notice that thanks to these help sessions, the counselors develop a sense of satisfaction (recognized for their contribution) and express the wish to continue their work while relying on the support and continuous reinforcement their skills.
