Aim: I.C.W.O is a Non profitable and Non Governmental Organisation working in the field of HIV /AIDS prevention and community welfare. I.C.W.O is working with Sex workers, their clients and Tourist at Mamallapuram for the past nine years. I.C.W.O also works with Homosexual Men in Chennai and Barbers in Tamil Nadu. We have also successfully completed AIDS awareness program for Auto-rickshaw drivers in Chennai, which was ed as the best practice in the country by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) for the year 1998.

Method / Issue: As said, there are about 6,20,000 people infected with HIV in Tamil Nadu, the situation of these people infected and affected with HIV/AIDS in Tamil Nadu, is depressing. They are looked down, suppressed and marginalized due to the stigma and taboo present in the communities. There are some NGOs that are working for the infected and affected but their services are not informed to them. Most of them are ignorant and are unaware of the services provided and lack support.
| |
Results / Comments: ICWO with the support of APAC-VHS organized the following programmes to make the PLHIVS to come out of the stigma and to make a comfortable world for them:
1. Kitchen queen contest
2. Cricket match
3. Football match
4. Valentines Day celebration
5. Supplementary Nutrition
| |
Discussion: After the interventions of ICWO,500 PLHIVs were able to get supplementary, nutrition and they felt more comfortable to come out of the isolated life. It was spreading a new hope to the dark lives of the PLHIVs.
Even though there are incidents reported on stigma and discrimination in Tamil Nadu ,the over all incidents have come down .Acceptance level of PLHIVS are increasing.
