Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the predictors of sexual abstinence among 12-15 year old church going adolescents in Botswana.

Method / Issue: An audio computer assisted self interview was administered to 133 participants aged 12-15 years recruited from different churches in Botswana. The components of the questionnaire were guided by the theory of reasoned action. All the participants were enrolled in a randomised contextually relevant, age appropriate and culturally sensitive HIV/STD risk-reduction intervention.

Results / Comments: A linear regression model was constructed for the pre-intervention data. Behavioural beliefs, normative beliefs and perceived control beliefs showed significance in predicting abstinence in the last 3 months. However, attitude towards abstinence and self-esteem were not strong predictors of sexual abstinence. The model explained 59% of the variance.

Discussion: The components that clearly showed significance, behavioural beliefs, normative and perceived control belief, should be included in the intervention to empower the youth and hence achieving the broader objective of HIV/STD risk reduction. The components are consistent with the theory of reasoned action.
