| Aim: The staff of Romanian Association against AIDS (ARAS) reached a lot of field experience in HIV care and prevention during 20 years of activity, sometimes without having an initial and/or updated training. In order to support field workers and to improve and extend services, in 2012 the training project ?KNOWLEDGE is POWER" was implemented for ARAS's staff with financial support from Sidaction. | ||||
| Method / Issue: All trainings were conducted by experts with long experience in motivational interview (MI) and community based research (CBR). Beside theoretical aspects, trainers paid special attention to practical skills as play roles, team work, and the use of non-formal tools (e.g. using beans to explain the Capture-Recapture estimation method). | ||||
| Results / Comments: At the end of the training, a number of 30 employees learned new methods in working with vulnerable populations by using practices from the MI theory, and other 15 learned how to develop and implement a CBR on HIV. Five research projects were issued emerging from the real needs of the organization and new strategies in the case management approach for drug users were developed. | ||||
| Discussion: The project was a successful exchange of knowledge and practices between theoreticians and field workers as all discussions and examples were very appropriate to the problematic situations encountered daily on the field. New perspectives and opportunities to improve the quality of the provided services were discovered. | ||||
