Aim:
HIV-serostatus disclosure is a complex phenomenon which varies according to the person(s) chosen to disclose to, whether disclosure is direct or indirect, personal resources and daily environments (social, working, etc). However, most studies use only simple indicators to investigate disclosure. Our international community-based research study constructed indicators reflecting different dimensions of HIV-serostatus disclosure which could be used as research tools in various socio-cultural contexts.

Method / Issue:
The study was performed by joint research teams (researchers /NGOs) in five countries. An exploratory qualitative research study first highlighted the multiple and complex realities faced by people living with HIV (PLWH) in terms of serostatus disclosure. A questionnaire was then designed, translated and pre-tested in the five countries. In addition to socio-demographic, psychological and socio-behavioural data, it collected specific descriptive psychosocial data to construct a detailed understanding of serostatus disclosure.

Results / Comments:
Data were collected for the following factors: 1) disclosure targets; 2) the degree of intentionality to disclose ; 3) breaches of confidentiality and persons at their origin. Data varied greatly, justifying the research question of investigating several different disclosure factors instead of simply asking whether one had disclosed or not. Data for the different factors were crossed with the degree of individual disclosure proactiveness in social networks to construct various indicators.

Discussion:
Questionnaire-based quantitative surveys are effective tools to develop an understanding of the complex phenomenon of HIV-serostatus disclosure. Detailed HIV-serostatus disclosure information is particularly important due to the serious repercussions of disclosure for the individual in terms of quality of life.
