Aim: Moyo Aids Foundation is a non-profit charitable community based organisation (CBO) based in Nkhota Kota, Malawi. Our aim is to increase education, prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS in Nkhota Kota district which spans the Lake of Malawi. We are doing this by providing grassroots educational programs, health advice, counseling and feeding orphaned and vulnerable children.

Method / Issue: In respect of Malawi and Nkhota Kota in particular there is very little accurate data collection of morbidity rates and rates of infection. However the evidence on the ground is that death rates are extremely high as is ignorance of HIV transmission routes and prevention. The Foundation?s approach is extremely pragmatic and based on using as much local knowledge resources as possible when it comes to prevention, education and development.

Results / Comments: The Foundation has as it?s core areas education, prevention and treatment of HIV, through offering health promotion sessions in villages every week in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

Discussion: Involving local communities in building long term economic development by setting up a wholesale business to allow local farmers to sell local crops which can then be processed and sold on to internal market and the rest of the country. This will allow generating funds for developing HIV and AIDS programmes.
