Aim: HIV is a family disease in that it mainly infects and affects people who love and are committed to each other, including couples, parents and children. It has taken a very long time to appreciate that, to be effective, prevention, treatment and mitigation needs to be directed to these social groups and not to individuals alone. Indeed, that the love and commitment between parents and children can be engaged and strengthened to be part of the fight against HIV and AIDS. Recent research and policy development will be reviewed to illustrate the importance of supporting children and families for an AIDS-free world.
