Aim: HIV disclosure to one?s stable sexual partner is important in preventing HIV infection and for the quality of life of those infected. Its individual and contextual determinants have not been widely investigated in the DRC.

Method / Issue: This sub-study is part of a 5-country community-based research study on HIV disclosure. Data were collected in the DRC for 300 PLHIV. Multivariate analysis, using a weighting logistic regression restricted to 127 people who declared a stable sexual partner, helped to determine variables independently associated with disclosure to stable partner.

Results / Comments: The following factors were positively and independently associated with disclosure to one?s stable sexual partner in multivariate analysis: being tested for HIV on one?s own initiative (OR 95%CI 2.97[1.18-7.46]), being in a relationship (OR 95%CI 3.61[1.14-11.44]), receiving sympathy upon disclosure (OR 95%CI 3.97[1.11-14.25]) and discussing seropositivity with more people (OR 95%CI 1.89[1.26-2.85]). Conversely, no sexual relations (OR 95%CI 0.28[0.09-0.83]) and obtaining money from family (OR 95%CI 0.26[0.10-0.67]) (i.e. no work income) were negatively associated with disclosure.

Discussion: The results show the importance of voluntary and free-of-charge testing practices implemented in the community-based organizations in the DRC. The government?s current questioning of these practices could have harmful consequences on HIV prevention and on the quality of care provided.
