Aim: To conduct an interactive workshop providing US and foreign junior social and behavioral science researchers with information necessary to apply to the US National Institutes of Health for funding.

Method / Issue: This workshop will be designed for junior and/or new investigators. It will be led by two long-time program officers at NIH, whose grant portfolios include many AIDS Impact meeting participants The workshop will explain the basic structure of NIH and the application process. It will describe how the various institutes generate research initiatives and manage the research support process. It will provide basic suggestions regarding the conceptual design of a research proposal, and helpful hints to consider in the application process. The didactic session will be supplemented by observations from NIH grant recipients who will be coerced into participating. This will be followed by, and interrupted by, questions and answers from the participants. During the final half hour, presenters will be open to discussing research ideas the participants may have
