  Aim:
We conducted in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of 40 HIV clinic patients in Kampala to explore how people living with HIV (PLWHIV) encourage others to adopt HIV protective behaviors.

  Method / Issue:
Content analysis was used to examine the content, trigger events and outcomes of prevention advocacy discussions.

  Results / Comments:
Content themes included encouraging specific behaviors such as testing and treatment, condom use and non-promiscuity, as well as more general cautionary messages of protecting against contracting HIV. Common triggers included wanting to prevent the target from “falling into the same problems I am in”, to benefit oneself with regard to avoiding re-infection, concern that the target would engage in risky behaviors, observed changes in the target’s health, and information received from the clinic. Respondents reported mostly positive or neutral responses to their advocacy; negative responses were rare.

  Discussion:
Interventions to empower PLWHIV to be change agents could represent a new frontier for HIV prevention.
